What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint — the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When this joint and the muscles around it become irritated, inflamed, or misaligned, the result is often called a TMJ disorder (or TMD). Symptoms can include jaw pain, clicking or popping when you open your mouth, headaches, ear pain, difficulty chewing, and a feeling that your bite has shifted.

TMJ disorders are surprisingly common, and they often go undiagnosed because symptoms can come and go or be mistaken for other conditions. At Lakeview Family Dentistry, we evaluate TMJ symptoms comprehensively and develop treatment plans tailored to each patient's situation.

Common signs of TMJ problems

• Jaw pain or tenderness, especially in the morning
• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing your mouth
• Frequent headaches, especially around the temples
• Ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ears (without an ear infection)
• Difficulty chewing or discomfort when biting
• Worn, chipped, or sensitive teeth from grinding
• A locked or stuck jaw — either open or closed
• Pain or stiffness in the neck and shoulders

How we diagnose TMJ

A comprehensive TMJ evaluation goes beyond just listening to your symptoms. We examine your bite, the range of motion in your jaw, the muscles around the jaw, and the joint itself. When needed, we use imaging to look at the joint structure in more detail. We also evaluate your teeth for signs of grinding (bruxism) or clenching, which are common contributors to TMJ problems.

Custom splints and appliances

For most TMJ patients, a custom-fitted dental splint or appliance is the first line of treatment. These appliances — sometimes called night guards, occlusal splints, or bite guards depending on their design — are worn over the teeth (usually at night) to:

• Reduce the pressure on your jaw joint
• Prevent the damage caused by grinding and clenching
• Relax overworked jaw muscles
• Allow inflamed tissues to heal
• Reposition the jaw into a more comfortable alignment

Every splint we fabricate is custom-made from impressions of your teeth. Generic over-the-counter night guards may help with mild grinding but rarely provide the precision, comfort, or therapeutic benefit of a professionally designed appliance.

For most patients, a custom appliance combined with lifestyle adjustments (stress management, jaw exercises, dietary modifications) provides significant relief.
