A modern approach to filling cavities

When decay is caught early, a small filling restores your tooth's structure and prevents the cavity from growing larger. At Lakeview Family Dentistry, we use tooth-colored composite resin for nearly all of our fillings — a modern, aesthetic alternative to the silver amalgam fillings that dominated dentistry for over a century.

Tooth-colored fillings (also called composite fillings, white fillings, or bonded fillings) are virtually invisible. When done well, no one — not even you — should be able to easily spot where a filling ends and your natural tooth begins.

Why composite fillings are better

• They match your natural teeth. We blend the composite to match the exact shade of your tooth, making the filling virtually undetectable.
• They preserve more healthy tooth. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth structure. We remove only the decayed portion, preserving more of your natural tooth than was possible with amalgam.
• They strengthen the tooth. Because composite forms a micro-mechanical bond to the tooth, the filled tooth is reinforced rather than just plugged.
• They contain no mercury. Composite fillings are made of a resin matrix with embedded glass or ceramic particles — no metal, no mercury.
• They can repair more than cavities. The same material we use for fillings can also repair chips, fractures, and worn edges of teeth.

For most situations, modern composite fillings are simply the better option. We still offer amalgam fillings in specific clinical situations where they may be appropriate, but composite is our default for new restorations.

What to expect during a filling appointment

A tooth-colored filling typically takes 20 to 60 minutes per tooth, depending on the size and location of the cavity. The process:

1. Local anesthesia. We numb the tooth and surrounding area. Most patients feel pressure but no pain during the procedure.
2. Remove the decay. Using a dental drill or laser, we carefully remove only the decayed portion of the tooth.
3. Prepare the surface. We clean the cavity and apply a bonding agent that helps the composite adhere to the tooth.
4. Place the composite. We apply the composite material in layers, shaping it to match the natural contours of your tooth.
5. Cure the material. A special blue light hardens each layer of composite within seconds.
6. Shape and polish. We sculpt the filling to fit your bite perfectly and polish it to a natural shine.

Most patients walk out of our Hudson office with no lingering discomfort. Some experience mild temperature sensitivity for a few days, which typically resolves on its own.

When fillings aren't enough

For very large cavities, where the tooth has lost too much structure for a filling to be reliable, we may recommend an inlay, onlay, or dental crown instead. The right choice depends on how much healthy tooth remains and the forces the tooth will encounter when you chew.

We'll never push you toward a more expensive treatment when a simpler one will work. If a filling will do the job and last, that's what we'll recommend. If something larger is genuinely needed, we'll explain why and discuss your options openly.

How long do composite fillings last?

With proper care, composite fillings typically last 5 to 15 years. Some last much longer. Their lifespan depends on several factors: the size and location of the filling, your bite, your home care habits, and whether you grind your teeth.

To extend the life of your fillings:

• Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
• Floss daily, especially around filled teeth
• Visit Lakeview Family Dentistry every six months for cleanings and exams
• Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
• Avoid biting hard objects like ice, pen caps, or fingernails

Replacing old silver fillings
