Enamel
Enamel is the hard, white outer layer that covers the visible portion of each tooth. It's the hardest substance in the human body, even harder than bone. Enamel protects teeth from the daily wear of chewing, biting, and exposure to acidic and sugary foods.

Overview
Enamel is your teeth's first line of defense against everything you bite, chew, and consume. Despite being the hardest substance your body produces, enamel is also surprisingly thin — typically only 2 to 2.5 millimeters at its thickest point on the chewing surfaces of molars, and much thinner along the sides of teeth. Once enamel is damaged, it cannot grow back. Unlike bone and most other tissues in your body, enamel has no living cells and no blood supply. Your body cannot rebuild it. This is why protecting enamel is so critical to long-term oral health.
Structure and function
Enamel is composed of approximately 96% mineral content, primarily a crystalline form of calcium phosphate called hydroxyapatite. The remaining 4% is water and a small amount of organic material. The hydroxyapatite crystals are organized into structures called enamel rods, which extend from the dentin-enamel junction to the tooth surface. This rod structure gives enamel both its incredible hardness and its slight ability to flex under pressure without fracturing. Enamel protects the softer, more vulnerable layers beneath it. Dentin, the layer directly below enamel, is much softer and more sensitive. Below dentin is the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When enamel is damaged or eroded, the underlying layers become exposed, leading to sensitivity and decay risk.
Threats to enamel
Several factors damage enamel over time. Acid erosion is the most common threat. Acids dissolve the mineral content of enamel, weakening it. Acidic foods and drinks include citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar, wine, sports drinks, soda, and fruit juices. Stomach acid from acid reflux disease (GERD) or frequent vomiting (as in eating disorders or bulimia) is particularly destructive. The bacteria that cause cavities also produce acid as they feed on sugars. Mechanical wear from teeth grinding (bruxism), brushing too hard, using abrasive toothpastes, or biting hard objects gradually wears enamel down. Friction from poorly fitting dentures or appliances can also cause wear. Certain medical conditions and medications affect enamel. Genetic conditions affecting enamel formation can leave teeth with thinner or weaker enamel. Some medications taken during tooth development cause enamel problems. Dry mouth from medications, radiation therapy, or certain diseases reduces saliva's natural protective and remineralizing effects.
Protecting your enamel
Several strategies help protect enamel and prevent erosion. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush — hard bristles and aggressive brushing wear enamel. Use fluoride toothpaste, which helps remineralize early enamel damage and makes enamel more resistant to acid. Wait at least 30 minutes after consuming acidic foods or drinks before brushing — acid temporarily softens enamel, and brushing immediately can damage it. Drink water throughout the day to neutralize acids and stimulate saliva production. Use a straw when drinking acidic beverages to minimize contact with teeth. Rinse with water after acidic foods or drinks. Limit acidic and sugary foods, particularly as snacks. If you grind your teeth, wear a night guard. Chew sugar-free gum after meals to stimulate saliva flow. If you have acid reflux, work with your physician to control the condition.
